If your optician has decided that you need prescriptive eyewear to enable you to see clearly, and if you have decided that glasses are your preferred choice for eyewear, you will have a number of different things to think about. You may have never had glasses before; in which case, this is an entirely new experience for you. Alternatively, you may have previously worn glasses but may have had little choice with regards to their lenses or design.

Modern prescription glasses offer patients a greater number of options than ever before, both in terms of their lenses and their frames. At Optique America, we are committed to giving our patients the widest possible choice of high-quality glasses. Here is what you need to consider when deciding which glasses are right for you.

Which Lenses Will Suit Your Requirements?

Your optician will be instrumental in helping you to decide which lenses are going to be best to suit your individual vision requirements. If you have a single prescription then single vision lenses will probably be recommended, whereas if you need two or more prescriptions combined to enable you to see at all distances, you may be suggested to opt for bifocal or varifocal lenses. However, there are some additional extra elements that you can decide upon. This includes whether you would like anti-glare coating, scratch-resistant coating or if you would like them tinted. There are also various lens materials to choose from, including glass lenses, plastic lenses, polycarbonate lenses, and high-index plastic lenses. Again, your optician will be able to help you select the most appropriate for your requirements and your budget.

Which Frames Will Suit You?

The frames are the most visible part of your eyeglasses and since you’ll be wearing your eyeglasses frequently, you will want to select a style that will enhance your facial features and your overall appearance. There are a number of different elements to take into consideration when finding the right style of frames to suit your face. These include:

Your skin tone

Skin tone is something that often gets overlooked when it comes to selecting glasses frames but can have a significant impact on their overall effect. If you have cooler skin tones, opt for silver, titanium or jewel-hued frames while if you have warm-toned skin, honey, brown, olive green, and gold will almost certainly suit you better.

The shape of your face

Unsurprisingly, your face shape will have a huge effect on the type of glasses that work best with your features. Here is a brief insight into which frame styles suit which face shapes.

Round Face: Round faces have soft features and a forehead, jaw, and cheeks that are similar in width. Choose wide, full frames in squares and rectangles to help offset the roundness of your face.

Square Face: If you have a wide forehead and strong, defined and wide jaw, you probably have a square face. Round, oval style frames will add length to your face and soften your features.

Long Face: Also known as an oblong shape, you have a long nose and narrow face. Wide, pilot styles will make your face appear shorter and wider and bejeweled or arty temples will draw attention to the widest part, making it seem more in proportion.

Triangle Face: Also known as a heart-shape, you will have a wide forehead and cheekbones, but a narrower chin. Choose bottom-heavy frames to add width to the lower part of your face or be brave and go totally rimless. Don’t choose any styles that draw attention to your forehead.

Oval Face: Lucky you! Oval faces have the most symmetrical features and you will find that virtually all styles, except super narrow ones, will suit your face.
